Well it happened again! The 2015 ‘Felton Food Festival’ was a ‘knock-out’! This year’s Festival had a lot to offer and was enjoyed by nearly 8,000 visitors throughout the day.
The expanded Festival site accommodated more stalls than previous years and the extra parking meant there were no hold-ups on the roads. Not only were people able to stock up on fresh locally grown produce and the different tasty foodstuffs available, they were able to relax under the gum trees in perfect weather and enjoy the numerous lunch choices on offer.
The inclusion of celebrity foodies, Matt Golinski and Alison Alexander and gardener, Jerry Coleby-Williams added depth to the program this year with a lot to learn from them about food and gardening. The cook-off between Alastair and Matt using ingredients purchased on-site was particularly insightful! Who would consider baking lamb-ribs in herb-infused hay!
The Q&A tent was well patronised with visitors able to hear from our local producers about how they farm in the Valley. It was well positioned in a field growing strip-crops of corn, sorghum, sunflowers, mungbean, soybean and lablab. The Grain Display and Anzac Biscuit tents also attracted a lot of interest and our cookbook, 'Felton...A Taste of The Valley' proved a big hit.
The grudge-match between Alastair and Costa remains a highlight, and this year it was in the garden, not the kitchen. A slow-wick vertical garden had to be constructed in the shortest possible time! Costa garnered a lot of help from his staunch fan base -a bevy of adoring children- and won the competition convincingly.
The Food Festival primarily owes its success to the support of its dedicated team of volunteers who are keen to showcase Felton's agriculture, and you, the public, who keep coming. We look forward to seeing you again next year. Mark Sunday 10 April 2016 in your diaries.
